Fresh Sugar

While winter is almost over, and it’s been a mild one in Cincinnati, I did not remain unscathed when it came to chapped lips. Dry lips are an unfortunate part of life, but there are so many great products on the market. Unfortunately, I’ve recently started to feel like the Fresh Sugar brand is just way too overhyped.

The Fresh Sugar lip treatments come in a variety of shades. There are even clear shades. They retail for $24 at Sephora. I’ve purchased several full-sized ones and have received small sample ones as well.

I’m very torn when it comes to the product. On one hand, it does moisturize lips pretty well. I also really like the variety of shades, and it is a great scent for a lip product. Still, for $24, I would prefer for these to last longer. I do feel like I have to reapply them way too often and I haven’t been impressed by the lasting power of the colors. But still, the worst thing is that the product seems to break so easily. I’ve had six of these now and the same thing has happened to each one. At some point when I’m applying them, the product starts to come apart so that the lip product gets smooshy. It’s hard to describe, but imagine how lipstick looks when it’s been left in a hot car for too long. It melts and becomes impossible to apply because the product keeps breaking down and migrating when you’re trying to use it. I feel like this has happened with every tube of this product that I’ve received, even though none of them have been left in a warm environment. I feel like I just waste too much of this product and it becomes too hard to apply without smooshing it everywhere. There are just way better lip moisturizing products out on the market, so I won’t be giving these another try.

Dior Addict Wonderful

It’s no secret that I love Dior products, especially lip products. There’s just something so luxurious about them. Sure, the name is iconic, but the quality of the products is still very impressive. I had a lot of luck with Dior Addict Lipstick when I wanted a bold lip, so I decided to try another in a softer shade.

I went with the shade Wonderful, which can be purchased from Sephora for $35. I just love how effortlessly it slides across my lips. The pigmentation is just perfect, and I love that there’s just a hint of glitter. I think that lipstick really completes a look. There’s something about it that pulls everything together, and so far, I’ve never been let down by a Dior lip product.

I will say that the shade Wonderful, which is a lighter shade, does not last quite as long as some of the darker Dior shades. It does fade, especially if you are eating, but the nice thing is that it fades very evenly. It’s also easy to apply that reapplying it hopefully won’t feel like much of a chore.

Overall, I’ve yet to find a Dior lip product that I disliked, and if you want to splurge on a lipstick, I definitely recommend the Dior Addict ones.

B&B Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer

When it comes to beauty, the thing I neglect the most is definitely my hair. I just feel like it doesn’t cooperate. It will never be stunning or particularly lovely, but there are a few products that I’ve discovered recently that seem to make it look less lifeless. My favorite so far has been Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer.

This hair product can be purchased from Sephora for $28, although I bought a smaller bottle for $12 (2 oz instead of 8.5 oz). The “primer” version, which is the one I bought, is a bit little than the regular oil. I think that this version is the best because it works for more hair types. I have dry ends but my roots get oily easily if I moisturize too much, and I’ve found that this works perfectly for me. I spritz it on after I shower, and it really does seem to help my hair have less breakage and look a bit more lustrous. It also smells like a salon, which is a scent I enjoy experiencing. When I’m using this product, I tend to avoid conditioning beforehand because it can also be used as a leave-in conditioner. I can’t say that I have a ton of frizz generally, but this product does make my hair look shiny and frizz-free as well.

Overall, I think this is a nice product. I feel less confident recommending hair products because I feel like I still have a lot to learn about hair, but this one does seem to be working well for me.

Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss – Fancy

Lipgloss is a deeply personal choice. Some people love the stickiness, and others avoid it completely because they hate sticky lips. Others think the shine is too bold while others want all the shine and glitter imaginable. I happen to love the shine and glitter, but I do often opt for a lipstick instead because I don’t love the stickiness. Still, I’ve found a gloss that does a great job with minimal stickiness: Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss.

This product can be purchased at Sephora for $30, which is a truly gut-wrenching price for a lipgloss. This is definitely a luxury product, but I am glad that I tried it. The one that I have (pictured above) is in the shade Fancy.

I love that this product has a brush instead of a sponge applicator. I feel like this allows for more precision. I’ve also been very impressed by how my lips don’t stick together much when I’m wearing this product. Most glosses, even the very pigmented ones, don’t have much lasting power, but I will say that this product gives a lot of lasting color compared to other glosses.

Overall, this is a great product and the best gloss I’ve tried, but it’s also ridiculously expensive. If you have some extra cash to burn and you want to splurge, then go for it! But if not, don’t feel too bad about skipping this product. It’s still just a lipgloss. I think that most splurging should be reserved for skincare and foundations since those make a more noticeable difference to an overall look. This luxurious gloss isn’t going to make or break a look.

NYX Butter Gloss

I feel like lots of beauty blogs love the brand NYX. It’s a very affordable brand that can be found at Ulta. I decided to give their butter glosses a chance since I kept hearing about how wonderful they are when it comes to both pigment and moisturizing abilities.

I picked up two shades from Ulta for $5 a piece, which is very cheap for a lip gloss. I tried them both and just felt incredibly underwhelmed. I kept hearing that they smelled amazing, but I thought they just smelled okay. The pigments were nice but they didn’t last very long. They didn’t seem more moisturizing than other glosses, and my lips weren’t noticeably softer after using this product.

I tried them off and on for about two weeks and just continued feeling overwhelmed. For $5, the product was fine, but they very much felt like they were only worth the $5 I paid. I’ve since tried a few more NYX products since so many beauty bloggers just love them, but I felt the same way about them all. In my opinion, this is a cheap brand that feels cheap. You’re getting what you’re paying for, and I don’t think I’ll be purchasing anything from this brand again. I’ve already given away all of the products I bought and I don’t miss them one bit.

PTR Acne Clear Invisible Dots

Over the past year, my acne has been a lot better than before, but I do still need some acne-related products. I found these Acne-Clear Invisible Dots from Peter Thomas Roth, and I was so excited to give them a try.

These can be purchased from Sephora for either $30 for 72 dots or $12 for 24 dots. The packages contain dots of different sizes, and each dot is a one-time-use only product.

I’ve found that these do work well, but they only work on certain kinds of zits. When I have a zit that is forming a white-head, I pop one of these on top of the zit and leave it on overnight. When I pull off the dot in the morning, my blemish is either gone or greatly diminished, which is awesome! However, most of my blemishes these days are just red bumps that rarely get to the white-head stage. For these deep red bumps, I have not noticed that these dots make much of a difference. So, if you’re considering buying this product, I would encourage you to only bother buying it if your zits typically result in white-heads. If that’s the case, then I think you’ll love this product. However, if your spots are merely reddish like mine, I think it’s best to skip this product.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush

As you can tell from the picture below, I really love Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush.

These are available from Sephora for $28 a piece, which is a great price for blush, especially if you’re used to brands such as NARs. While these don’t have the same ideal finish as some of the higher-end brands, these Tarte blushes have great buildable color and are very long-lasting.

These come in a variety of shades, so there is sure to be the perfect one for every skin tone. Some are very matte and some have a bit of shimmer. I think the finish of the shimmery ones is a bit better than the matte ones which can look a little harsh if applied with a heavier hand. Still, these are very blendable and buildable, and I think these are great blushes, especially for the price.

Tarte is also a great brand for those looking for a more natural alternative. Tarte uses very natural ingredients, and these are great options for people who have very sensitive skin.

Secret Invisible Lipliner

I don’t typically wear lip liner, so that may explain why I was underwhelmed with No Bleeding Lips – Secret Invisible Lipliner by Know Cosmetics.

I have never wanted to bother with getting different lip liners in every single shade to correspond with all my many lipsticks. It just felt like a waste to me, especially since my lips are shaped in a way that I don’t often deal with lipstick bleeding past my lips. However, when I saw this product at Sephora, I thought it was such a neat concept. It’s a clear lipliner that goes with all lipstick. It was a $15 impulse purchase that I didn’t really need, but I still wanted to share in case any of you are looking for something like this.

So, since I didn’t really experience bleeding before using the liner, that didn’t change when I started using the liner. The waxy consistency was good and it felt smooth around the lips. But I didn’t notice any difference. However, it did feel like this would work for someone who does experience bleeding, so I’d be really interesting what results other people had with the product. It’s had some great reviews on Sephora’s website.

If you are tired of buying matching lip liners for each of your lipsticks, then why not give this a try? It’s a really cool concept and it could save you money in the long-run if you just have to buy this one lip liner.

Origins GinZing Eye Cream

I have been using eye cream since I was 16 in the hopes that I’ll be able to someday completely eliminate the dark circles under my eyes. In all honesty, they aren’t terrible, but it has been an insecurity of mine ever since an unpleasant relative made a big deal about how terrible the dark circles looked. As she tends to be overly critical of every aspect of every person she meets, I know I shouldn’t have taken her words to heart, but I did let it grow into quite the insecurity.

I’m very excited to have a new favorite eye cream! Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream is absolutely the best I’ve tried so far and I use it every morning and evening during my skincare routines. It is the standard half-ounce bottle (and it will go a long way like all eye creams) and is $30. This makes it one of the cheaper eye creams at Sephora, which is a nice plus.

The biggest ingredient in this product is caffeine, and it definitely seems to help the skin under the eye to feel tighter and look better overall. I don’t tend to have issues with puffiness, but this one is great for dark circles. However, this is in part because the product is slightly tinted and shimmery. It helps to create the illusion of brightness under the eyes. Still, it instantly makes my eyes look better, so I love it. The illusion is not enough that I can forego undereye concealer during the day, but it is a nice start. No eye cream will ever really fix dark undereye circles permanently. All of them are temporary fixes, and this one works really well for me.

Winter is Here!

I realized last week that winter had finally arrived when I was working at the library desk and a patron with a hat and coat and gloves came rushing in looking all red in the face. She looked cold and scared and she blurted out, “It’s snowing outside!” before grabbing a few books and checking them out as quickly as she could. Knowing that I had forgotten to wear my new jacket that day, I was worried about leaving and going home until I saw that the blizzard outside was comprised of approximately eight snowflakes.

While I loathe snow and ice, especially when I’m driving, I do love BOOT SEASON! I used to have so many pairs of boots, but when I moved to my own apartment, I knew I didn’t have room to keep them all. Now, I’m down to three pairs of inexpensive but adorable boots.

The first in the above picture (from left to right) is a pair that I got for $30 at Target last year. The middle one I got this year at Gabe’s (previously knows as Gabriel Brothers) for $20. The last pair is from Kohl’s and they were only $30. Places such as these can be very hit-or-miss and their stock turns over very quickly, but I think that inexpensive yet comfortable shoes can be found out there!

So, should you pay low prices for boots you’ll have to replace every year or so? Would it be better to invest in more expensive boots that will last longer? I, honestly, don’t know what the answer should be for you – this is kind of a personal preference. However, I try to invest my money in pieces that are classics. I usually spend very little on anything trendy or something that I won’t wear very often. I’d rather just get the cheaper version if it’s going to have a short life either way. Boots, while they can be trendy, typically fall under the classic category, but I just like to change them up every year. Because of this, I don’t want to spend too much if I’m going to get tired of them by the end of the season.
