Dior Glow Palette

It’s no secret that I adore Dior! Whenever they have a new product, I immediately rush out to get it. Recently, they launched their backstage collection, and I was really excited to try the Dior Backstage Glow Face Palette. This product will cost you $45 at Sephora and similar retailers.

So, first things first, this is NOT a contour palette. It’s not marketed as one either, but I know some people get confused when it comes to bronzers. To truly contour, you need an ashy-toned (preferably matte) bronze or brown shade. Anything with shimmer (like these shades) will make the hollows of the cheek look swollen rather than sunken. So, products like this one are designed to be applied just to the apples of the cheek (for color) or the highest part of the cheekbone (for highlight).

I was so impressed by these shades. They’re all really pretty and very pigmented. The top two shades are a white and a champagne highlighter. I was initially a bit scared of how white the white one was, but it blends so well and has a very luminous, ethereal finish. It wasn’t chalky or garish at all. The champagne one was lovely and added a nice glow without being too warm. The bottom two shades were blushes: one rosy and one bronze. They’re also really pigmented but blendable and will compliment most skin tones with a bold pop of color.

As far as texture goes, these are very smooth. However, they contain some rather chunky glitter, and I know that’s not what everyone prefers. However, I love this palette when I want to really stand out. It’s not the most neutral, daytime palette. This one is geared towards night drama instead!

Overall, I adored this palette, although I admit the price is a bit steep for something that’s a special occasion and not a daily palette (still, powders last a long time before they need replacing).

Is this one you’ve tried or are interested in trying? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section!

Physician’s Formula The Healthy Lip

I love lipstick, but I tend to hate most longwear liquid lipsticks because they can be difficult to apply and very uncomfortable as they tend to really dry out the lips. It’s not a good look at all when you have patchy, flaky, cracked lips, and that seems to be the result of wearing too much liquid lipstick. However, on a whim I picked up The Healthy Lip from Physician’s Formula while I was grocery shopping, and I was so incredibly impressed! This product is available at select drugstores for just $8. Pictured below is “Vitamin Beet” but I loved it so much that I also picked up a true red called “Fight Free Red-icals.”

There are so many positive traits with this product. It’s opaque and easy to apply – just one little swipe and you’re good to go. The tear-shaped doe-foot applicator makes it easy to swipe along the natural curves of your lips, so the application is a cinch. The formula applies smoothly and evenly in just one coat.

The product wears so evenly throughout the day, although there seems to be a difference in wear depending on the shade. The berry shade I purchased fades more evenly and doesn’t seem to transfer as much when I’m eating versus the red shade that I purchased. I don’t know why reds are always messier! Still, I was pleased with both shades in how they wear because I only ever had to touch up when I had a full meal. Other that that, this would stay in place all day.

All-day wear is usually very drying in a liquid lipstick, but this one was so much better than I expected. While my lips felt a bit dry by the end of the day, it wasn’t uncomfortable at all. Best of all, my lips didn’t look dry. The formulation has a velvet finish, so it’s pretty matte but soft and comfortable.

The one big drawback that I have with this product is that the shade range is extremely limited. Of the 13 shades that they offer, 9 of them seem like a variant of berry. I would love for them to come out with some more colors in the future for sure.

Have you tried this product, or do you have a favorite liquid lipstick? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Jordana Cosmic Glow Holographic Lip Gloss

It’s no secret that one of my vices would be buying new lip products. I have way more than a person ever needs, yet they keep catching my eye. The other day, I was walking around Walgreens and saw the Jordana Cosmic Glow Holographic Lip Gloss. It was mesmerizing and only $5, so I decided to give it a chance, having no expectations whatsoever.

img_2286

Truth time: I’ve always avoided this brand because it seemed cheap and I’d never read good reviews. But I knew I wasn’t going to care if a $5 lip gloss ended up sucking. Still, I was extremely impressed! I went with the shade “crystallized pink” which shows up as a sheer medium pink wash of color with some blue holographic sparkles (fun fact – blue and blue undertones make teeth look whiter!)

Overall, I actually loved this lip gloss. It was super easy to apply evenly with its doe-foot applicator and just a swipe or two provides enough coverage. It’s pretty but also kind of whimsical with the holographic/glittery finish. Texture-wise, I was so pleased that it was not sticky AT ALL. As for wear, it’s pretty typical for a gloss. The glossiness will fade within 2 or 3 hours, but it still left an even stain of light color which was nice.

I can’t believe how well this product performed for $5. I think I’ll actually repurchase it and get a few more shades to try soon!

Dior Addict Lip Lacquer Plump

It’s no secret that I love Dior lip products. Their Dior Addict lipsticks are my absolute favorite, so I always have to try their new lip products. In the recent Sephora sale, I picked up the Dior Addict Lip Lacquer Plump which retails for $37.

I’m actually not wowed by this product, which is kind of disappointing. I bought the shade Glitterati, which is a glittery nude shade, and I was disappointed by how minimal it looked. The glitter is not very noticeable and doesn’t last for very long. The nude shade is also pretty sheer, although that is kind of expected when you buy a “nude” shade. I guess I expected it to be more of a pink-nude, but it’s a real true nude. Overall, I would be okay with the shade if the glitter just popped a bit more.

Now, in terms of the plumping results, I do think that these claims are met. My lips do look instantly fuller with this product. It’s also nice that it’s semi-matte but doesn’t dry out the lips at all. It feels pretty light on the lips and doesn’t seem to settle into any lines.

However, I have also been disappointed in how quickly the product fades. For $37, I shouldn’t have to reapply 4-5 times throughout my workday. I’m always okay with 1-2 touch-ups per day, but 4-5 is something I’d only expect from a drugstore product – not Dior.

Overall, I’m really disappointed with this new product. It’s definitely not worth the hype or the money. I still love Dior lip products, but this one was a bust!

Sunday Riley The Influencer Clean Longwear Foundation

I ran out of my beloved Make Up For Ever foundation recently, so I decided to purchase a new medium-to-full coverage foundation. As I was browsing Sephora’s website, I saw that Sunday Riley has actually released their first foundation. Sunday Riley is a skincare company that has definitely achieved cult status for their amazing products. I was so intrigued that I got the new Sunday Riley The Influencer Clean Longwear Foundation in the Sephora sale. This foundation retails for $42 at Sephora.

Recently, my skin has been a bit oilier than usual, and this foundation has been amazing at combating that. This foundation has a pump that administers the foundation as a liquid. The consistency of the liquid is very medium – it’s neither thick (which can be difficult to blend) or watery (which rarely provides decent coverage). Like most foundations, a beauty blender or sponge will help with the application. However, I was amazed that one pump of this product could cover my entire face so well. There’s no need to layer with this one. It covers all redness and most acne and leaves a gorgeous satin-matte finish, which I love because it keeps my oiliness at bay without looking too matte or cakey.

The coverage is fantastic. It can be built up easily to a full-coverage, and even with only one layer, I don’t have to use nearly as much concealer as I used to. The lasting power is also fantastic, and I don’t have to touch up at work as long as I’ve used a finishing powder with it. I definitely think I’ve found my new favorite foundation! Yes, $42 is kind of high for 1.08 oz of product, but this one is worth every penny to me.

The range of shades for this product is also pretty expansive. There are 20 shades to choose from in their color spectrum. I’m very fair and I use the second lightest shade – 110 (for very fair skin with pink undertones).

This product works so well for my combination/oily skin, but I imagine that it wouldn’t perform as well with dry skin. The matte finish does feel a bit drying, which has worked well for me, but I would proceed with extreme caution if you already have dry skin. If you do decide to still try it because you like the finish and coverage, you might have to pair it with a very moisturizing primer if you already have dry skin.

Since Sunday Riley is a skincare company, of course they’ve packed this product with good-for-you ingredients too. This includes Canadian willow herb, northern truffle extract, and bisabolo. It’s also cruelty free!

I’m so impressed with this product! Have you had a chance to try it? Be sure to let me know your thoughts in the comment section!

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Quench Lip Rescue

I love lip products! There’s just something about putting color on the lips that makes a makeup look feel put together. Recently, I obtained the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Quench Lip Rescue in the shade Nude. This product can be purchased from Sephora for $19.

This one is quickly becoming one of my favorite lip products. It glides on so easily and covers the lips with a  sheer wash of color. It definitely helps lips to feel more moisturized and nourished. Long after the color has faded, the lips feel softer and healthier. The color doesn’t last a terribly long time, but that’s the trade off of having a nourishing formula. I definitely don’t mind reapplying this one throughout the day because it also has this amazing minty smell that I love.

Overall, I highly recommend this one to anyone looking for a moisturizing lipstick with just a touch of color. I would love to purchase more shades of this one, especially the shades Rose and Cherry. Tarte is also one of the more natural brands at Sephora, so I always love when I find one of their products that I love because I know it isn’t filled with tons of chemicals.

Have any of you tried this one or any other Tarte lipsticks? Please, let me know your thoughts in the comment section!

Bobbi Brown Eyes

I love eye makeup. There’s something that is so mesmerizing about eyes. It’s the feature I stare at most in others, so it makes sense that most of my makeup routine revolves around creating different eye looks. I recently received two eye makeup samples from Bobbi Brown: the Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick and the Eye Opening Mascara. These can both be purchased from Sephora for $30 each.

First, let’s talk about the cream shadow stick. I loved the texture of this product – it’s very creamy  (as its name suggests). It’s easy to apply and does dry down. Unfortunately, without an eye shadow primer, it does tend to settle into the eye crease. Also, I was pleased with the staying power of this product. It definitely did last all day and still looked vivid and sparkly when I got home from work. I would definitely recommend this shadow, especially for people who prefer creams to powders for eye shadow. If you’ve never considered a cream shadow, I would recommend one if your eyelids seem to lack natural oils. If lids are too dry, it can make powder shadows look a bit patchy. If this frequently happens to you, maybe you should try a cream shadow which has a bit of natural moisture and might glide on well with a drier eyelid. People with oilier lids can use cream shadows too, although they might not last as long on an oily lid.

As for the mascara, it was definitely just okay. For $30, I expected a much better finish. It had a bold brush and deposited a nice amount of product, but while my eyelashes did seem to have more volume and were appropriately darkened, they remained very straight and would not hold a curl at all. My overall lash look seemed very lackluster with this particular mascara, so I will probably be giving this sample to a friend. I will not be purchasing the full size.

Have you tried anything from this brand? I’d love to know your thoughts on some of their other products!

Wander Beauty Lipstick

Lipstick just pulls a look together! It adds a pop of color to your appearance, even if it’s a neutral – it still adds color to your lips to make you look more alive. Recently I received a sample of Wander Beauty Lipstick. These are purchasable from Sephora for $30 but they come in duos so you’ll be getting a neutral and a brighter/darker shade too. The one I have is a mauve neutral called “Barely There.”

I really love this product! This lipstick is light and easy to apply. One little swoosh will apply it easily and evenly to your lips. It has a nice opacity for a neutral shade. The finish is definitely matte but it doesn’t appear dry at all nor does it physically dry out the lips. The lasting power is pretty average, so you’ll definitely have to reapply after eating, but I think the pros far outweigh the cons in this particular lipstick.

I’m the type of person who tends to stick with very bold colors: bright pinks, reds, and berries. So, I’m stunned by how much I like this neutral shade. I think that using this lipstick has taught me that my ideal neutral is a mauve shade instead the other variations of neutrals: true nudes, very light pinks, browns, etc. So, I also appreciate this lipstick for helping me learn that.

I definitely plan to buy the full size of this product when my sample runs out, and I’m excited to try the burgundy shade that this one comes with in its duo. I can’t say that I wear burgundy lips often, but I think it will be perfect for fall. Since it’s paired with my ideal neutral, I have high hopes that it will be perfect for me too.

Cargo Water Resistant Blush – Bali

I used to be terrified of wearing blush, because I get embarrassed for people who have super noticeable blush that isn’t well blended. I was so afraid that this would be me if I tried blush, but I’ve found that applying it in light layers and blending a lot and just putting a little on the apples of the cheek really enhances a look. Recently I tried the Cargo Water Resistant Blush in the shade Bali. This can be purchased from Ulta’s website for $26.

At first, when I received this blush, I was afraid it would be too dark for my fair skin, but I was pleasantly surprised! The texture is very silky which means it’s naturally pretty easy to apply light layers. I was able to use a little at a time and build it into my ideal amount. The texture also made it very easy to blend! I was very pleased with the shade and finish of this blush. Also, the water resistance made it hold up really well, even under hot and humid conditions. I am extremely happy with this blush! I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a pretty shade of pink.

Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation

On my quest to find the perfect drugstore foundation that truly can compare to high end products, I picked up a bunch on my way home from work. This first one is a product that I remember using in high school and loving. Of course, a lot of things have changed since them. I’ve been spoiled on Sephora products and my skin has changed significantly. In high school, my skin was much oilier than it is now and I had more acne. Still, I wanted to give it a try to see what my impression would be after years of trying other makeup. This is the Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation which can be purchased from Target and similar stores for $8.

The texture, true to its name, is a mousse. This is a much different texture than most foundations – it’s very light but kind of dry and it dries down into a kind of powdery finish. I’ve found that this doesn’t apply well with a brush or beauty blender sponge. It’s much easier to blend with your fingers, and I suspect this is because of the way fingers warm the foundation. This may sound odd, but skin is much warmer than room temperature and the contact seems to almost melt this makeup a little (which provides a better finish). Similarly, after I apply this foundation, it almost always looks weirdly cakey, but after a few minutes, my skin has warmed it up and it suddenly has a very pretty demi-matte finish. So, if you’re trying this one, don’t judge it too much until you’ve worn it for about 15 minutes.

I will say that this is a very medium coverage foundation. It covers redness and dullness and has a lovely finish, but it does not do a good job at covering acne, which makes it hard for me to wear it during certain times of the month. Also, because of the strange texture, I’ve found that it’s hard to layer concealer over the foundation. So, this is a better foundation if you have small flaws to cover that aren’t textural like zits or scars. I’m happy to wear it on “good” skin days, but I need something with fuller coverage and a different texture for “bad” skin days.

As for lasting power, this one does fade surprisingly fast. By lunchtime, I can tell that it’s faded quite a bit. I don’t want to reapply all my face makeup at work. I’ve tried setting powders and finishing sprays with it, and that helps a little but it’s still noticeably faded. Overall, I was disappointed with the lasting power and I wouldn’t suggest this one if you’re going to be in a humid or warm environment for long because it will definitely be gone quickly under those conditions.

I was impressed by this foundation, but I don’t think I’ll repurchase it. I’ve already found at least two better drugstore foundations that I’ll be reviewing in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

What is your favorite drugstore foundation? I’d love to know, so please feel free to leave your suggestions in the comment section so I can check them out.
