New Year, New Me

I can’t believe it’s already the first day of 2019! I’ll admit that 2018 was a difficult one for me, but I’m so ready to let it go and move forward. So, I wanted to publicly put my resolutions forward in order to be held accountable.

Resolution 1: Create New Content

I love posting here on Haute Couture Society! I know it’s just a small blog, but it’s meaningful to me and I have enjoyed interacting with readers. So, I resolve to post Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with bonus Sunday vlogs.

Resolution 2: Focus on Health

My weight has been a big source of unhappiness for me. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had an unhealthy relationship with both food and my body. I really want to focus on being a healthier person in 2019 – eating right, exercising, but also accepting the limitations of my body and not equating self-worth with physical appearance.

Resolution 3: Finish My Novel

Last year, after finishing my MFA in creative writing, I started a romantic suspense novel. For me, the biggest roadblock to writing is my insecurity. I find myself constantly judging what I’m writing, which leads to a lot of second-guessing. This year, I want to just enjoy the process of writing and hold off on judging until I get to the editing phase.

What are your resolutions? I’d love to know, so please feel free to share in the comment section!

Thanks for reading!

Namaste – A New Direction

Never fear – I’m not abandoning Cincy Couture! I adore sharing my reviews of makeup, skincare, and fashion with you. However, I have decided to start a new writing project called No Place Like Om. Here’s an excerpt from my first post there:

Welcome to my new blog: No Place Like Om. This website is where I’m going to chronicle my transformation on and off the yoga mat. I hope to connect with others along the way so that this journey can be a shared experience. While I have nothing profound to impart, I do have a lot of honesty and openness. So often, lifestyle and yoga blogs show you the perfect. I want to show you the perfectly imperfect.

My yoga journey began 14 years ago when I was starting 8th grade in a new school. Gym class was the part of day I dreaded most. Awkward in my newly-pubescent body, I loathed changing in front of others, but even worse was the class itself. I’ve never been very athletic or coordinated, so I’ve always known the shame of being picked close to last when it comes to choosing teams. One day, the gym instructor decided to start an alternative choice – girls who didn’t want to participate in the sport du jour could choose to instead follow a yoga or pilates video in room adjacent to the gym. Knowing that I wouldn’t face the same rejection from a DVD, I joined a handful of other girls away from the noise of kickball and competitive screaming. That’s where I first fell in love with yoga and pilates. In that quieter space, I started connecting to my body in a way I never had before. I felt stronger and more confident – at least for the 30 minutes or so that I was focused more on the DVD than the social structure of school. Continue Reading this post at No Place Like Om…

I wanted to share this site with my Cincy Couture readers in case you’re interested in following No Place Like Om too for motivational musings, information about yoga and yoga philosophy, and reviews of all-natural products. If you’re not interested, that’s okay too. Stay tuned for tomorrow when I’ll return to my regular Cincy Couture content!

Thanks for reading!

Natural Activated Charcoal Toothpaste

One major trend in all-natural products is the inclusion of charcoal. Charcoal has a lot of benefits: it can filter water, aid in digestion, deep clean your pores, and so much more. A lot of people have even been turning to activated charcoal toothpaste to clean and whiten teeth. The other day, I found a generic brand of activated charcoal toothpaste at TJ Maxx for just a few dollars, so I decided to give it a try.

First, it was so funny that my mouth looked like a horror movie while I was brushing my teeth. This toothpaste is a bold black so it looked like I was eating the creature from the black lagoon. It actually didn’t taste that bad. There was definitely some added mint. Overall, I liked that it genuinely did make my teeth look whiter! However, my mouth didn’t feel fresh enough afterwards and I didn’t feel like my teeth were as clean as when I use a more traditional toothpaste. I’ll keep using this one occasionally, but it’s never going to replace other toothpaste for me.

Have you tried activated charcoal toothpaste? What were your thoughts? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Health Hack: Spa Water

My boyfriend Josh is always getting on my case about drinking water. As much as I resist admitting that he is right, it is true that hydration is really important for both health and beauty. I know that when I drink a lot of water, I can tell that I’m getting many benefits, such as: fewer headaches, more radiant skin, less hunger, less fatigue. The problem is …

I HATE THE TASTE OF WATER! It’s just so boring.

For a while, I tried to trick myself into drinking water by putting lots of crystal light (and other similar products from other brands) into my water. I have a really sensitive stomach and the artificial sugar just didn’t sit well with me. I noticed that I would feel slightly queasy for an hour or so every time I drank a glass. This is not only irritating but also a bit worrying. So, in order to get the fruity flavor without the artificial sugar, I decided to make my own spa water! Spas often have really refreshing pitchers of water mixed with chunks of some sort of fruit or veggies. I wondered if it would be worth the effort to do this myself (I know it’s not actually difficult to cut up fruit and toss it in water, so you may be wondering about my use of the word “effort” right about now. Let me assure you, I can be very lazy when it comes to  my health, hence why I’ve used the free gym at my apartment complex a grand total of one time).

I’ve been really enjoying this experiment! I feel a lot better sipping the spa water throughout my day at work instead of multiple cups of coffee. I especially appreciate having clearer skin and fewer headaches. My two favorite blends to put in the water bottle are lime with raspberries and grapefruit with cucumber. For a thriftier option, you could also use frozen fruit and then the water will stay chilled longer as well. The only downside? I have to pee more often which is sometimes inconvenient.
