Tom Ford Lip Color

I love when Sephora sends me samples of products that intrigue me even though I know I’d never buy them. Such was the case with today’s product: the Tom Ford Lip Color. This lipstick is sold at Sephora and similar retailers for $55.

To be fair, this is a fabulous lipstick. It’s opaque, comfortable to wear, long-lasting, and satiny in texture. All of these are definitely qualities that I love in lipstick! So, if you have a big budget, by all means, go for this one! I mean, just look at the beautiful packaging. It exudes elegance. However, I just can’t justify spending $55 on a lipstick. This may seem kind of hypocritical since I own several of Dior’s $35 lipsticks, but there’s just something in my mind about spending $55 on one single lipstick that makes me think I’d be crossing some sort of line with my makeup addiction.

Maybe someday I’ll be fabulously wealthy enough to not blink twice as I buy this in every color … but today is not that day!

Where is your maximum price line for lipstick? I’m genuinely curious, so please let me know in the comment section!

Also … Happy Halloween!

Too Faced Melted Matte Lipstick

I really love the Too Faced Melted lipsticks. Too Faced tends to discontinue all the products I end up loving, but thankfully they just keep coming out with more and more of these lipsticks. The latest version I had the opportunity to try is the Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick, which can be purchased at Sephora and similar retailers for $21.

I was sent the shade “Queen B” which is supposed to be a soft mauve. While it definitely has mauve undertones, it seems too brown to really work with my complexion and has a tendency to make me look a bit sickly. So, I wouldn’t recommend this particular shade to those with cool skin tones or people who are very pale. Still, this was a pretty good lipstick.

It is indeed very matte, but it is not uncomfortable to wear. The texture is a bit velvety, but it sits lightly atop the skin of the lips. It’s pretty opaque, so you’ll only need one or two coats. Also, it’s not very messy and does apply pretty evenly (which can’t be said of the melted latex lipstick range). In terms of wear, it won’t last through a whole meal but it will stand up just fine when drinking. So, you’ll have to reapply at least once throughout the day, but it’s not too much of a hassle because it tends to fade pretty evenly. Overall, this is an improvement for the melted lipstick concept and another win for the Too Faced brand.

Have you tried any version of the melted lipsticks? Be sure to share your experience in the comment section!

Revlon Ultra HD Lip Lacquer

Recently, I was picking some things up at the drugstore, when a stunning pink glossy lip product caught my eye. It was on sale, so I just had to have it, and that’s how I ended up trying the Revlon Ultra HD Lip Lacquer which retails for about $5 at select drugstores.

First, this is more of a liquid lipstick than a gloss even though it is very much packaged like a gloss. It is extremely opaque so the color you see is the color you’ll get on your lips with just one swipe. Still, it was easy to apply and faded pretty evenly throughout the day. It wasn’t messy at all and didn’t spread out while I ate a full meal. There’s minimal transfer, but it’s easy to reapply if needed.

Overall, I thought this was such a great, affordable product. It’s easy to apply, inexpensive, long-lasting, non-drying, and gorgeous! The only thing I didn’t care for was the scent. It very much smells like paint, which is a bit off-putting until you get used to it. Still, I was very impressed by this product, and I think I’ll have to pick up some more shades!

MAC Lipstick: Ruby Woo

It’s starting to feel truly Autumnal in Cincinnati, and I am so excited! This is my very favorite season. It always puts me in the mood for soup, knitting, cardigans, and…red lipstick. There’s something about cooler seasons that causes people to wear heavier makeup, and I’m no exception. Autumn and Winter are the months where I typically wear bolder lip colors like reds and berries. Recently, I received one of the most iconic red lipsticks on the market: MAC Ruby Woo. This product is sold from MAC stores and select retailers for $18.50.

There’s a reason that this lipstick has become iconic – it’s very easy to wear. MAC lipsticks are long-lasting without causing too much dryness. They’re extremely opaque and easy to apply. Also, there’s a great blue undertone to this red which will enhance the whiteness of your teeth. Now, I’ll admit that this one probably works better on cooler skintones because of the hint of blue. Thankfully, that works well for me. The finish is also very matte, which just makes this look super chic with some vintage pin-up vibes. This is definitely one of my favorite red lipsticks!

Have you tried this one or do you have a different favorite red lipstick? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

CLE Melting Lip Powder

I love trying new, weird products! It seems like the makeup industry is constantly evolving, and so there are always new things to try. Recently, I was sent something I had never heard of before: the CLE Melting Lip Powder. This product retails for $20 online.

The concept of this product is that it is a powder lipstick that melts onto your lips to form a long-lasting color. It contains vitamin E to condition the lips as well. I was very intrigued to try this one!

First, it was actually very easy to apply. It has a doe-foot applicator that coats the lips pretty evenly with the product. The lipstick is very opaque and just one swipe will be enough. It was also a very pretty rose shade that went well with my complexion.

Unfortunately, from the moment I put it on, I knew this was not going to be the product for me. Despite the inclusion of the vitamin E, it was exceptionally drying. My lips felt coated with powder (which, obviously, they were – but that’s just not a pleasant feeling). As my morning continued, I felt more and more uncomfortable.

I will say that when I had a cup of coffee, there was very little transfer. However, when I ate lunch, a lot of the color on the inside of the lips rubbed off. It looked pretty bad, but at that point, I just decided to rub the rest off and then apply a balm instead of reapplying this to try to get a normal feeling back in my lips.

Overall, I just can’t recommend this product. It’s an interesting idea, but it’s very uncomfortable to wear. Plus, it didn’t actually perform better than a traditional longwear lipstick because it didn’t even last through a meal. I definitely won’t be purchasing this one, nor will I be using more of the one I was sent. I don’t even really feel comfortable giving it away to a friend because it was so uncomfortable to wear.

Have you tried a lip powder before? What was your experience? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Dior Addict Lip Lacquer

I am a red lipstick fiend, especially in autumn and winter. I’m already looking through my lipstick collection and making sure I have one for every occasion. As I was looking, I found one that I’ve had a while but have never reviewed: the Dior Addict Lacquer in American Girl (a shade that has been discontinued!) This product is sold at Sephora and similar retailers for $37 (and if you like this shade – I think that 877 Turn Me Dior is the closest current shade to this one).

I adore the original Dior Addict lipsticks – they are comfortable to wear and last most of the day. They are longwear with minimal dryness. However, the Lacquer version of the Dior Addict lipsticks dry out the lips even less than the original. I experience zero dryness with these and I still get an all-day or almost all-day color.

There is a small drawback to this Lacquer version of lipstick: it can be a bit messy. It’s as opaque as a layer of paint. Because of this, you’ll only need one coat – but you’ll need to be very careful when applying it. Also, it’s a bit wet in terms of texture but it never dries down completely. This means it is prone to smudging, especially if you’re eating something like a sandwich where you might open your mouth very wide.

That being said, I really like this lipstick. I’ve learned that it’s best to apply just a very thin layer to keep smudging to a minimum. Also, I just really love this bright cherry red shade, so I’m bummed that they’ve discontinued this particular shade. Thankfully, I’ve got a lot left though. The one I have has a satin finish, but a few of them have glitter finishes, so that’s probably what I’ll have to try next!

Have you tried this lip lacquer or another type of lacquer? How did it compare to traditional lipstick for you? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge Lipstick

I often go for bold lipstick, but since I’ve been playing up my eyes recently, I’ve been trying to have more demure lips. Recently, I was going through my lipstick bag (which is overflowing again!) and I found this gem: the Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge Lipstick in Taupe Beige. This product can be purchased at Sephora and similar retailers for $22.

I love that this is a perfect neutral. It never clashes with the rest of my makeup or any color of clothes I might choose to wear. It’s also a nice matte shade that sits comfortably on the lips and doesn’t dry them out. I wouldn’t say it’s very long-wearing since I’ll have to reapply it a few times throughout the day, but it’s so neutral that it’s just really easy to reapply.

Overall, I’m just loving this pretty neutral. I love that there’s a slight pink undertone that compliments my skintone, and it’s fantastic that this matte shade doesn’t settle into any lines on my lips or make my lips dry out.

Do you have a favorite neutral lipstick? Be sure to let me know in the comments section!

Pretty Vulgar – Bury Them With a Smile Lipstick

I’m such a sucker for pretty packaging! Recently, as I browsing Sephora’s website, I came across the Bury Them With a Smile Lipstick from Pretty Vulgar and was just enamored with the fun name and adorable design on the lipstick tube. I couldn’t help myself – I just had to buy it. But I’m so glad I did! This product can be purchased from Sephora and similar retailers for $24.

Not only is this a fun lipstick to look at and carry around in your handbag, it actually performs really well too. I purchased the shade, “Darling, Be Daring,” which is a great cool-toned fuchsia. It applies pretty opaquely and very evenly in just one or two swipes. The finish is matte, and I’ve been so impressed by how this holds up throughout the day.

This is a long-wear lipstick, and it wears very well. There is minimal transfer when eating and drinking. After a big meal, you can tell that it’s faded a bit (and not completely evenly if you look closely at the inner portion of the lips), but it still looks pretty good after eating. Still, I tend to reapply after a meal, although I think I could get away with not reapplying and it would still be passable.

The product description of this lipstick claims to keep your lips moisturized with hydrating butters and oils, and I do disagree with this claim. While I’ve been pleased that it doesn’t seem to dry my lips out too much and never settles into any lines, it is certainly not moisturizing. My lips are definitely a bit dryer at the end of the day (as is normal for any long-wear lipstick) and I require a thicker balm in the evening to remedy this for the next day.

Overall, I’ve been really pleased with this lipstick. The shade is so pretty, and it’s been so easy to maintain throughout the day. I highly recommend this one!

Have you tried anything from Pretty Vulgar? If so, please let me know in the comment section. I don’t know much about the brand, and I’d love to try another of their products.

Physician’s Formula The Healthy Lip

I love lipstick, but I tend to hate most longwear liquid lipsticks because they can be difficult to apply and very uncomfortable as they tend to really dry out the lips. It’s not a good look at all when you have patchy, flaky, cracked lips, and that seems to be the result of wearing too much liquid lipstick. However, on a whim I picked up The Healthy Lip from Physician’s Formula while I was grocery shopping, and I was so incredibly impressed! This product is available at select drugstores for just $8. Pictured below is “Vitamin Beet” but I loved it so much that I also picked up a true red called “Fight Free Red-icals.”

There are so many positive traits with this product. It’s opaque and easy to apply – just one little swipe and you’re good to go. The tear-shaped doe-foot applicator makes it easy to swipe along the natural curves of your lips, so the application is a cinch. The formula applies smoothly and evenly in just one coat.

The product wears so evenly throughout the day, although there seems to be a difference in wear depending on the shade. The berry shade I purchased fades more evenly and doesn’t seem to transfer as much when I’m eating versus the red shade that I purchased. I don’t know why reds are always messier! Still, I was pleased with both shades in how they wear because I only ever had to touch up when I had a full meal. Other that that, this would stay in place all day.

All-day wear is usually very drying in a liquid lipstick, but this one was so much better than I expected. While my lips felt a bit dry by the end of the day, it wasn’t uncomfortable at all. Best of all, my lips didn’t look dry. The formulation has a velvet finish, so it’s pretty matte but soft and comfortable.

The one big drawback that I have with this product is that the shade range is extremely limited. Of the 13 shades that they offer, 9 of them seem like a variant of berry. I would love for them to come out with some more colors in the future for sure.

Have you tried this product, or do you have a favorite liquid lipstick? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Too Faced Melted Latex Lipstick Fail!

I love dramatic lipsticks, but they don’t all love me back! Recently, I was shopping online at Sephora and I saw that they had a sale on the Too Faced Melted Latex lipsticks. They were only $10, and I’ve had great luck with these before. I wanted to go for something really bold, so I went for the deep red shade “Bite Me.”

I was so looking forward to this one. I envisioned myself turning heads with my dramatic red/wine lips like a vintage movie starlet. Alas, that was not meant to be. When the lipstick arrived, I instantly knew something was wrong. I did receive the right shade, but instead of a reddish wine, it looked like a dark brown. Still, I paid $10 so I was going to give it a go.

I looked like a cartoon villain dressed up for Halloween. Not only was the color all wrong, but the opacity was terrible. It was a very uneven product and it took a lot of effort to make the color look evenly distributed. I wore it while shopping that night and I felt a lot of stares but not the kind I had hoped for.

The next day, I brought it to work. When things got slow, I went to the bathroom to try it on again, but my trusty coworkers assured me that it needed to be removed ASAP.

I did learn a few things from this experience though:

  1. Whenever possible, test a lipstick shade in person instead of just guessing based on the picture posted on the website.
  2. Sometimes things are on sale for a reason.
  3. Always have a backup lipstick in your purse when testing something so risky.

Not all makeup risks pan out, but it’s still fun to try sometimes. Still, this is a shade that’s getting tossed for sure!
