Clinique Chubby Plump & Shine Lip Gloss – Goliath Grape

I am so picky when it comes to lip gloss! I like high-shine, shimmery colors that are mid-opacity and never ever sticky! That’s a tall order for a lot of glosses, but I found one that I really love: the Clinique Chubby Plump & Shine Lip Gloss in Goliath Grape. This product can be purchased from Clinique’s website and select retailers for $17.50.

There are so many great facets to this product. Let’s take a look at them:

*Color – I like this purplish shade that’s a fun mix between a berry and a violet. It’s relatively sheer but still is very noticeable. I love that it’s not too opaque because I think that makes this one more versatile. Also, it has a lot of shimmer, which is perfect for me!

*Texture – This one is not even a teeny bit sticky, which is so ideal for a gloss. It goes on smooth and lasts for quite a while. You’ll need to reapply after eating, but that’s really standard for a gloss.

*Benefits – While this product claims to plump the lips, I didn’t see this any more than I do with any other lip gloss. Any shiny, glossy product is going to create the illusion of fullness. However, it is noticeably moisturizing, so that does set this product apart from some glosses. After a day of wearing this product, my lips still feel supple and smooth. So, this one scores some bonus points for not drying out my lips.

Overall, I loved this gloss and I would definitely try more shades in this range. Have you tried this one or do you have a favorite gloss you want to share? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Dior Glow Palette

It’s no secret that I adore Dior! Whenever they have a new product, I immediately rush out to get it. Recently, they launched their backstage collection, and I was really excited to try the Dior Backstage Glow Face Palette. This product will cost you $45 at Sephora and similar retailers.

So, first things first, this is NOT a contour palette. It’s not marketed as one either, but I know some people get confused when it comes to bronzers. To truly contour, you need an ashy-toned (preferably matte) bronze or brown shade. Anything with shimmer (like these shades) will make the hollows of the cheek look swollen rather than sunken. So, products like this one are designed to be applied just to the apples of the cheek (for color) or the highest part of the cheekbone (for highlight).

I was so impressed by these shades. They’re all really pretty and very pigmented. The top two shades are a white and a champagne highlighter. I was initially a bit scared of how white the white one was, but it blends so well and has a very luminous, ethereal finish. It wasn’t chalky or garish at all. The champagne one was lovely and added a nice glow without being too warm. The bottom two shades were blushes: one rosy and one bronze. They’re also really pigmented but blendable and will compliment most skin tones with a bold pop of color.

As far as texture goes, these are very smooth. However, they contain some rather chunky glitter, and I know that’s not what everyone prefers. However, I love this palette when I want to really stand out. It’s not the most neutral, daytime palette. This one is geared towards night drama instead!

Overall, I adored this palette, although I admit the price is a bit steep for something that’s a special occasion and not a daily palette (still, powders last a long time before they need replacing).

Is this one you’ve tried or are interested in trying? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section!

Shiseido Eyelash Curler

I sometimes dream of long, luxurious, perfectly curled eyelashes. Of course, what I have are lackluster and stick straight out. Because of this, I thought I’d try the Shiseido Eyelash Curler.

img_2287

This eyelash curler is available at Sephora and similar retailers for $20. I must say that while this doesn’t make my eyelashes look perfect, it does make them significantly better. It’s a sturdy curler with a strong grip, and that makes a big difference. It also is shaped well and allows me to get really close to my lash line for the ideal curl. Overall, I’ve been really happy with this product. I would say it’s one of the best I’ve tried.

Have you tried this one or do you have a favorite eyelash curler? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Marc Jacobs Lip Gloss

The other day, I got a fun surprise in the mail from Allure: the Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi-Shine Lip Gloss in Moonglow. This product is available at Sephora and similar retailers for $28.

This is a fantastic gloss! Moonglow is a very soft pink nude shade, which is pretty much universally flattering because it just adds a glossy boost to your natural color. I don’t know how the more dramatic shades perform, but this one really is the perfect neutral.

From a texture standpoint, I love how smooth this gloss it. It’s not sticky at all! I really hate sticky glosses, so I’m thrilled by this one. There’s also a teeny bit of tingle and plumping action, which is a nice bonus. Plus, the scent is very minty, which I love.

Overall, I adore this gloss. It’s definitely a bit pricier than I would normally go for when it comes to a basic, sheer lip gloss, but I’ve still been really enjoying this product!

Dior Backstage Cool Eyeshadow Palette

Eyeshadow palettes are a big seller for cosmetics companies, but I hate when I buy a palette only to discover that I can’t used a significant portion of the colors. Whenever I’m considering buying an eyeshadow palette, I really look at it and make sure that the majority of colors are ones that I could wear pretty frequently. I was so excited when Dior launched their Backstage Makeup Collection, and I was browsing Sephora’s website. I discovered that this collection included a cool-toned shadow palette filled with light pinks, mauves, purples, and taupes. The moment I saw it, I knew that I could rock every single color, so I jumped at the chance to purchase the Dior Backstage Eyeshadow Palette in Cool. This palette is sold for $49 at Sephora and similar retailers.

First, let’s discuss the price. Yes, it’s a really hefty price, especially when you only get 8 shadows and 1 square of primer. Upon reflection, this palette is not worth the price, but I do still really like it for those who have the urge to splurge!

The shadows are gorgeous, and there is a nice variety of both matte and shimmer shades. When choosing eyeshadows in the morning, I have been finding myself grabbing this palette over and over again because these shades are all cool-toned but also neutral. Not only can I use every shade in this palette, but I can also use them daily for a variety of subtle looks. The shades are all pretty buildable, but even when using the darker shades, the looks aren’t going to get more dramatic than maybe a daytime smokey eye. Overall, this palette is a great daily palette with a fun spin on neutral shadows that really enhance the green in my eyes.

I was surprised by the sheer quality of the shades, but as I mentioned, you can build them up until they’re as bold as you want. The texture is pretty consistent for each shadow, and they apply quite smoothly and evenly. I was pleased that none of the shadows seemed chalky or patchy. Rather, there was almost a satiny finish to the shadows.

Now, let’s talk about the built-in primer square. It was not good. I found that using this primer before the shadow did not result in long-wear and there was still quite a bit of creasing by the end of the day. When I used my Urban Decay or Too Faced shadow primers instead, I was much more pleased with the overall look – there was no creasing and the shadows were far more vibrant and long-lasting.

To be honest, I do love this palette even though the price tag was exorbitant. I’ve been looking for another daily palette with purples (since my other daily palette – UD Naked 3 – has more pinks/beiges) and I’ve been pleased with the look of these shades!

Would you consider buying this one? Do you know of any dupes for this palette? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Pretty Vulgar – Bury Them With a Smile Lipstick

I’m such a sucker for pretty packaging! Recently, as I browsing Sephora’s website, I came across the Bury Them With a Smile Lipstick from Pretty Vulgar and was just enamored with the fun name and adorable design on the lipstick tube. I couldn’t help myself – I just had to buy it. But I’m so glad I did! This product can be purchased from Sephora and similar retailers for $24.

Not only is this a fun lipstick to look at and carry around in your handbag, it actually performs really well too. I purchased the shade, “Darling, Be Daring,” which is a great cool-toned fuchsia. It applies pretty opaquely and very evenly in just one or two swipes. The finish is matte, and I’ve been so impressed by how this holds up throughout the day.

This is a long-wear lipstick, and it wears very well. There is minimal transfer when eating and drinking. After a big meal, you can tell that it’s faded a bit (and not completely evenly if you look closely at the inner portion of the lips), but it still looks pretty good after eating. Still, I tend to reapply after a meal, although I think I could get away with not reapplying and it would still be passable.

The product description of this lipstick claims to keep your lips moisturized with hydrating butters and oils, and I do disagree with this claim. While I’ve been pleased that it doesn’t seem to dry my lips out too much and never settles into any lines, it is certainly not moisturizing. My lips are definitely a bit dryer at the end of the day (as is normal for any long-wear lipstick) and I require a thicker balm in the evening to remedy this for the next day.

Overall, I’ve been really pleased with this lipstick. The shade is so pretty, and it’s been so easy to maintain throughout the day. I highly recommend this one!

Have you tried anything from Pretty Vulgar? If so, please let me know in the comment section. I don’t know much about the brand, and I’d love to try another of their products.

Lâncome Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara

I finally found it! After going so long feeling ambivalent towards most mascaras, I’ve finally found one that takes my lashes from lackluster to luxurious: the Lâncome Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara. This product is available from Sephora and similar retailers for $25.

I love the tight brush with sturdy bristles in this mascara wand. They seem to comb through my lashes so well to create a dramatic (and not spidery) look. I don’t know how this formula does it, but my lashes are finally keeping a curl and staying nice all day. Typically, I would avoid using a waterproof formula daily since that can lead to damage of the lashes, but I just can’t get over this one. I think I’m going to have to try the non-waterproof formula to compare the two. Still, even with the waterproof aspect, it’s been easy to remove with my normal eye makeup remover. This truly is the best of both worlds: it lasts all day but is easy to remove. Plus, my lashes are looking fantastic.

Have you tried this mascara or the non-waterproof version? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Anastasia Lip Gloss

I adore lip gloss, but I’m very picky sometimes. I have a cool-toned complexion, so I limit my color choices. Plus, I hate sticky things. But a good lip gloss is a great confidence booster. Recently, despite my aversion to corals, I tried the Anastasia Lip Gloss in St. Tropez. This gloss retails at Sephora for $16.

I was pleased that I could pull this off, even though it has some warm coral undertones. It’s still pink enough to be kind of neutral though, so that works in my favor. It’s a truly stunning color with a high-shine finish that is a bit metallic.

The consistency of this gloss is delightful. It’s thick enough that you really only need one coat for a beautiful, opaque look. Best of all – it’s not sticky at all. It feels almost like a mousse on the lips, which never completely dries down. The good thing about that is you get all the color of a lipstick without any dryness.

Have you tried this gloss? What did you think? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Physician’s Formula The Healthy Lip

I love lipstick, but I tend to hate most longwear liquid lipsticks because they can be difficult to apply and very uncomfortable as they tend to really dry out the lips. It’s not a good look at all when you have patchy, flaky, cracked lips, and that seems to be the result of wearing too much liquid lipstick. However, on a whim I picked up The Healthy Lip from Physician’s Formula while I was grocery shopping, and I was so incredibly impressed! This product is available at select drugstores for just $8. Pictured below is “Vitamin Beet” but I loved it so much that I also picked up a true red called “Fight Free Red-icals.”

There are so many positive traits with this product. It’s opaque and easy to apply – just one little swipe and you’re good to go. The tear-shaped doe-foot applicator makes it easy to swipe along the natural curves of your lips, so the application is a cinch. The formula applies smoothly and evenly in just one coat.

The product wears so evenly throughout the day, although there seems to be a difference in wear depending on the shade. The berry shade I purchased fades more evenly and doesn’t seem to transfer as much when I’m eating versus the red shade that I purchased. I don’t know why reds are always messier! Still, I was pleased with both shades in how they wear because I only ever had to touch up when I had a full meal. Other that that, this would stay in place all day.

All-day wear is usually very drying in a liquid lipstick, but this one was so much better than I expected. While my lips felt a bit dry by the end of the day, it wasn’t uncomfortable at all. Best of all, my lips didn’t look dry. The formulation has a velvet finish, so it’s pretty matte but soft and comfortable.

The one big drawback that I have with this product is that the shade range is extremely limited. Of the 13 shades that they offer, 9 of them seem like a variant of berry. I would love for them to come out with some more colors in the future for sure.

Have you tried this product, or do you have a favorite liquid lipstick? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Too Faced Melted Latex Lipstick Fail!

I love dramatic lipsticks, but they don’t all love me back! Recently, I was shopping online at Sephora and I saw that they had a sale on the Too Faced Melted Latex lipsticks. They were only $10, and I’ve had great luck with these before. I wanted to go for something really bold, so I went for the deep red shade “Bite Me.”

I was so looking forward to this one. I envisioned myself turning heads with my dramatic red/wine lips like a vintage movie starlet. Alas, that was not meant to be. When the lipstick arrived, I instantly knew something was wrong. I did receive the right shade, but instead of a reddish wine, it looked like a dark brown. Still, I paid $10 so I was going to give it a go.

I looked like a cartoon villain dressed up for Halloween. Not only was the color all wrong, but the opacity was terrible. It was a very uneven product and it took a lot of effort to make the color look evenly distributed. I wore it while shopping that night and I felt a lot of stares but not the kind I had hoped for.

The next day, I brought it to work. When things got slow, I went to the bathroom to try it on again, but my trusty coworkers assured me that it needed to be removed ASAP.

I did learn a few things from this experience though:

  1. Whenever possible, test a lipstick shade in person instead of just guessing based on the picture posted on the website.
  2. Sometimes things are on sale for a reason.
  3. Always have a backup lipstick in your purse when testing something so risky.

Not all makeup risks pan out, but it’s still fun to try sometimes. Still, this is a shade that’s getting tossed for sure!
